Africa

Our support for expanding electricity access through off-grid lighting and energy began with the Lighting Africa program more than a decade ago with our first pilot projects in Kenya and Ghana in 2009. Since then, we have expanded our support across much of the continent and across the globe. Among those living without access to electricity in 2020, 77 percent—about 568 million people—lived in Sub-Saharan Africa, while 80 percent lived in rural areas around the world.
