Market Trends Assessment

Lighting Africa published a landmark report “Solar Lighting for the Base of the Pyramid- Overview of an Emerging Market” on the solar portable lighting market for the base of the pyramid.  The report assessed the solar portable lighting market today, with projected trends over the next five years. This will become a regular publication that will be updated every two years and circulated widely within the global off-grid lighting industry. The report: addresses market trends and statistics at a global level with more detailed analysis for the Africa market; provides pricing curves for lighting products—past and future. It in addition provided estimated market penetration rates for Africa and the projected impact of off-grid lighting products and discusses stimulants/drivers for future market growth.

To help firms increase efficiency in their value-chains, Lighting Africa has also conducted basic value-chain analyses of popular consumer goods, starting in Ghana and Kenya. Plans are to replicate these analyses across the continent. The analyses examined multiple cost build-ups, evaluated value-chain options, and assessed opportunities for effective product dissemination targeting specific geographic regions. Baseline data on off-grid lighting products, sales, pricing, and channels were also developed.

Lessons learned from market trends assessment

Africa is set to become the largest market for solar portable lights, with 700 million people who will be off-grid by 2030.

Solar portable lights could provide access to clean and safe lighting by 2015 up to an estimated 65 million Africans who are currently either un-electrified or under-electrified.

The market potential for solar portable lights is enormous and ripe for investment; the findings indicate a 40 – 50% compounded annual growth rate in sales volume for the next 5 years.
